LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett upon the occasion
of her designation as recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Gail Reed-
Barnett upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Woman
of Distinction Award; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Reed-Barnett
earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Medgar Evers
College, Master of Science degree in Counseling and Development from
Long Island University and a Doctorate of Education degree from Nova
Southeastern University in Child, Youth and Family studies; currently,
she is a New York City School Counselor/College Advisor; and
WHEREAS, Being a product of the public education system, Dr. Gail
Reed-Barnett is aware of the plight of our young people, the need for
committed and dedicated educators, and the importance of parental
involvement in helping a child achieve maximum academic success; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett has been instrumental in bringing many
creative and innovative programs to her school community as it relates
to developing the "whole child" and building relationships between chil-
dren and their families; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman served as a member of Community Board
17 and was also on its Youth Services Planning Committee; in 2013, she
was elected Community Board 17 Chairperson; and
WHEREAS, As a member of the Youth Services Planning Committee, Dr.
Reed-Barnett also worked diligently in planning the first and second
"Career Day for Youth" and the second annual "Youth Happen" event; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett is dedicated and committed to her
mission to empower each member of her community including parents, young
adults, senior citizens, immigrants, with the knowledge needed to make
wise, clear choices and decisions; she continues to work for and with
the people of her community to see her vision become a reality; and
WHEREAS, Recently, Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett was elected to the position
of Governor for the New York State School Counselor Association which
services School Counselors in the New York City area; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and accolades from various
community and educational leaders for her work in the community, Dr.
Gail Reed-Barnett has been honored with the Caribbean Images Martin
Luther King Award, and the 2008 Medgar Evers Alumni Legacy Award; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Winston, their
daughter, Tameka, and grandson Christian Alexander Essen Moran, all of
whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her
achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Gail Reed-Barnett.
