LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Craig Biggio upon the occasion of
his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown,
New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those esteemed individuals who distinguish themselves through
exceptional performance, outstanding achievement, and peerless commit-
ment to excellence; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Craig Biggio upon the occasion of his induction into the National
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York; and
WHEREAS, Craig Alan Biggio was born in Smithtown, New York, in 1965;
he is a graduate of Kings Park High School on Long Island, where he
played both football and baseball; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, this esteemed athlete began his baseball career when
he was called up to be the catcher for the Houston Astros; he would
continue to play for Houston for the entirety of his career; and
WHEREAS, Considered one of the greatest defensive players in Major
League Baseball history, Craig Biggio has started at the positions of
catcher, second baseman and outfielder during his illustrious career,
and has won four Golden Glove awards; and
WHEREAS, Known for his speed and offensive prowess as well as his
sterling defense, Craig Biggio won the National Silver Slugger Award for
catchers in 1989, and recorded seven All-Star game appearances; and
WHEREAS, Between 1993-1999, Craig Biggio averaged better than 17 home
runs and 33 steals a year, with 116 runs scored batting as Houston's
leadoff hitter; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Craig Biggio is fifth on the all-time list for
most doubles, and holds the record for most times being hit by a pitch;
and
WHEREAS, Craig Biggio has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A national spokesman for the Sunshine Kids Foundation, bene-
fitting children with cancer, Craig Biggio was honored with the 2007
Roberto Clemente Award for his commitment to humanitarian causes; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Patty Biggio, and
their three children, Conor, Cavan, and Quinn, all of whom feel privi-
leged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Craig Biggio on his induction into the National Baseball
Hall of Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Craig Biggio.
