LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Wegmans
Food Markets, Inc.

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those busi-
nesses and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a regional supermarket chain
comprised of 88 stores: 46 in New York, 17 in Pennsylvania, seven in New
Jersey, seven in Virginia, and seven in Maryland, as well as four in
Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is one of the largest private
companies in the United States, employing over 45,000 employees; with
annual sales in 2015 of $7.9 billion, the company ranked 33rd on the
2015 Supermarket News list of the Top 75 Supermarkets based on sales
volume; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1916, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a family-owned
company, headquartered in Rochester, New York; currently, the vital
business is led by Danny Wegman, who holds the position of CEO; Colleen
Wegman, his daughter, serves as President; and his other daughter,
Nicole Wegman holds the title of Senior Vice President; and
WHEREAS, Brothers Walter and John Wegman learned the food business by
working in their parents' store in Rochester; John Wegman peddled fresh
produce from a pushcart, and in 1916, he opened the Rochester Fruit and
Vegetable Company, which marks the beginning of Wegmans Food Markets,
Inc.; and
WHEREAS, One year later, Walter Wegman joined his brother; in 1950,
his son, Robert Wegman, assumed leadership of the company, guiding it
until his death in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Since 1998, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. has consistently been
ranked on FORTUNE magazine's 100 Best Companies to Work For list, and
was rated No. 9 on FORBES magazine's 2015 list of America's Best Employ-
ers; in addition, it was named the best for corporate reputation among
the 100 most visible companies nationwide according to the 2014 Harris
Poll Reputation Quotient study; and
WHEREAS, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. prides itself on raising the bar
on the shopping experience by providing the best quality, a spectacular
abundance of choice, restaurant-quality prepared foods, beautiful stores
and displays, and an exceptional level of customer service; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is committed to
strengthening Western New York communities by distributing exceptional
levels of charitable donations focused on programs which reduce hunger,
help young people succeed, promote healthy eating and activity,
strengthen neighborhoods, and support United Way initiatives; and
WHEREAS, The Wegman family realizes that their employees are an inte-
gral part of its amazing success, and subsequently, the company provides
strong employee benefit programs, including an employee scholarship
program which provides $4.5 million in tuition assistance to employees
each year; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. has strived to care
about the well-being and success of every person, pursue excellence in
everything it does, make a difference in every community it serves,
respect and listen to their people, and empower their people to make

decisions which improve their work and benefit their customers and their
company; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.'s success, recognizes its contributions
to the local and State economies, and extends its highest commendation
to the corporation and its employees, fully confident that, in its
future, it will enjoy the same sparkling success which has so character-
ized its past; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.
