LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 90th Anniversary of The Luther-
an Church of Our Savior on January 3, 2016

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and Nation to pay tribute
to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to the
ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 90th Anniversary of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior on
Sunday, January 3, 2016; and
WHEREAS, In 1925, a survey conducted by the Pastoral Conference of
Buffalo, with the view of locating a mission in their midst, found the
Cold Spring section of Buffalo offered a wonderful mission opportunity
and petitioned the Board for Black Missions to station a worker in
Buffalo, New York; and
WHEREAS, The first worship service and Sunday school class were held
on the evening of Sunday, January 3,1926, at a residence at 1424 Jeffer-
son Avenue in Buffalo; 12 people assembled for this first service, and
eight children were enrolled in the Sunday school; and
WHEREAS, On September 4, 1927, eight members of the congregation were
received by the rite of confirmation, and it was at this service that
the name "The Lutheran Church of Our Savior" was adopted; and
WHEREAS, Four years later, on October 31, 1931, the property located
at 94-96 Northland Avenue was purchased and on November 29, 1931, the
cornerstone was laid at 96 Northland Avenue; and
WHEREAS, The present House of Worship at 26 Brunswick Boulevard was
purchased in June of 1960 from Trinity Old Lutheran Church congregation;
two separate Lutheran congregations have, in turn, continuously and
successively occupied this church building for 93 years; and
WHEREAS, The Lutheran Church of Our Savior is the only African-Ameri-
can Missouri Synod church in the historic Hamlin Park District of
Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, After nine decades of steadfast and unwavering dedication to
its community, The Lutheran Church of Our Savior continues to stand
humbly, prayerfully, meditatively and joyfully; and
WHEREAS, The Lutheran Church of Our Savior stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior on
January 3, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Buffalo, New York.
