LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Michael Gruenthal upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Flame of Hope Award by the
Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and
character of life in the communities across New York State are reflec-
tive of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations and indi-
viduals who devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Michael Gruenthal upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Flame of Hope Award by the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New
York to be celebrated at its 27th Annual Confections in Chocolate Gala
on Saturday, March 7, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York works dili-
gently to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in
all life experiences and to prevent, control and cure epilepsy through
services, education, advocacy and research; and
WHEREAS, As residents of Northeastern New York face the physical,
emotional and social uncertainties of epilepsy every day, the Epilepsy
Foundation is there to help those afflicted become happy, self-confi-
dent, productive adults, by offering them, as well as their friends,
families and caregivers, a variety of programs; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York proudly
recognizes those who have made significant contributions to increasing
awareness of epilepsy and in support of the Epilepsy Foundation of
Northeastern New York's efforts with its Flame of Hope Award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Gruenthal is Professor and Chair of Neurology at
Albany Medical College and Director of the Neurosciences Institute at
Albany Medical Center; he is a nationally renowned expert in treating
the most complex cases of epilepsy and truly merits this high honor; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of the University of North Carolina Medical
School, Dr. Michael Gruenthal served as an Associate Professor of
Neurology, Program Director of the Neurology Residency Training Program
and Chair of Neurology at the University of Louisville prior to joining
Albany Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man is currently Co-Chair of the Epilepsy Foun-
dation of Northeastern New York's Professional Advisory Board and often
serves as a spokesperson for the Foundation on medical issues; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Michael Gruenthal is a member of the
National Epilepsy Foundation's Professional Advisory Board and generous-
ly donates his time and talents in support of issues important to the
epilepsy community in New York State and nationwide; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous accolades during his outstanding
career, Dr. Michael Gruenthal was recognized with the 2008 Excellence in
Service Award also by the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York
for his support of the organization as a researcher, author, physician,
advocate, teacher, mentor and leader; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
recognize Dr. Michael Gruenthal for his unwavering commitment to the
Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Michael Gruenthal upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Flame of Hope Award by the Epilepsy Foundation of
Northeastern New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Michael Gruenthal.
