LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim Saturday, May 7, 2016, as Birth Mother's Day in the State of
New York

WHEREAS, Birth Mother's Day is the one day out of the year set aside to
praise and pay tribute to biological birth mothers of adopted children;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to memorialize Governor
Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Saturday, May 7, 2016, as Birth Mother's Day
in the State of New York, in honor and recognition of biological mothers
of adopted children; and
WHEREAS, In 1990, a group of birth mothers from Seattle, Washington,
created Birth Mother's Day on the Saturday before Mother's Day; the
women gathered together to acknowledge each other and support one anoth-
er, as well as reflect on their choices and cope with feelings of
remorse and guilt; and
WHEREAS, Birth Mother's Day is also a day to educate about the issues
surrounding adoption, which is the assumption of parenting of another
person, usually a child; this process transfers all rights and responsi-
bilities along with filiations from the biological parents to the
parents by adoption; and
WHEREAS, Birth Mother's Day is a day to show compassion and under-
standing to all birth mothers, not only in the State of New York, but
throughout the Nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to pay tribute and commend
these women who are worthy of full recognition for their valued contrib-
utions, and who should be celebrated by all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the celebration of Birth Mother's Day, Saturday, May 7,
2016, in honor and recognition of biological mothers of adopted children
throughout the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
