LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring George D'Alessandro upon the occasion of
his selection as the 2016 Senior Citizen of the Year by the Putnam Coun-
ty Office for Senior Resources on May 6, 2016

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor George
D'Alessandro upon the occasion of his selection as the 2016 Senior Citi-
zen of the Year by the Putnam County Office for Senior Resources to be
celebrated at an event on Friday, May 6, 2016, in recognition of his
outstanding contributions to his community through his valuable and much
appreciated volunteer work; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1929, in the Bronx, George D'Alessandro and his fami-
ly moved to Mount Vernon, New York, when he was two years old; in 1945,
the family settled in Putnam County, where he currently lives on the
same property that his family bought 67 years ago; and
WHEREAS, From 1948 through 1953, George D'Alessandro proudly served as
a member of the United States military in the Korean War; following his
discharge, he worked for Putnam County as a Civil Engineer; and
WHEREAS, In 1958, George D'Alessandro became a sports writer, and
today, continues to write a sports column for the local newspapers; in
addition, for 25 years he served as a parochial school Physical Educa-
tion Teacher, a position from which he retired in 2010; and
WHEREAS, George D'Alessandro enjoyed a successful career which focused
on sports and health, and has always been a passionate volunteer, gener-
ously dedicating his time; currently, he is a Senior Fitness Volunteer
Instructor at the Carmel and Mahopac Office for Senior Resources (OSR)
Friendship Centers; and
WHEREAS, As a Senior Fitness Volunteer Instructor, George D'Alessandro
has helped many seniors improve themselves physically and has shown that
exercise can be fun; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, George D'Alessandro made extraordinary
contributions to Putnam County; he volunteered as a coach for Memorial
Recreation of Carmel and Kent (MRACK) Baseball and Basketball as well as
Kiwanis Little League Baseball, and in the 1960s, held the title of
Recreation Commissioner for the Town of Kent where he established many
new youth recreation programs; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, George D'Alessandro served as a Faculty Consultant
for parochial school newspapers in the 1980s, and established after-
school intramural sports programs; he continued in both capacities until
2010; and
WHEREAS, In 2002, George D'Alessandro was the recipient of the Volun-
teer of the Year Award from Saint Lawrence O'Toole School, and received
the New York State Assembly Certificate of Merit as a "Just Do It"
Volunteer; and
WHEREAS, Along with his late wife of 50 years, Marilyn, with him
throughout have been his two children, George and Karen; three grand-
children, Anthony, Mandy and Jennifer; and three great-grandchildren,
Cortland, Cameron and Tyler; all of whom feel privileged to be part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, George D'Alessandro's distinguished
record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor George D'Alessandro upon the occasion of his selection as the 2016

Senior Citizen of the Year by the Putnam County Office for Senior
Resources; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to George D'Alessandro.
