LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Denis Mulcahy upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New
York Friends of Ireland on March 12, 2015

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Denis Mulcahy has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Denis Mulcahy
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement Award by the New York Friends of Ireland, to be celebrated
with a Cocktail Reception on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the "21" Club,
New York City; and
WHEREAS, Denis Mulcahy was raised in County Cork and is a dual Irish
and American citizen; he is a retired decorated member of the New York
Police Department Bomb Squad, owner of Waterstone Inn of Greenwood Lake,
New York, and co-founder of the internationally known, Project Children;
and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of Denis Mulcahy, Project Chil-
dren has brought more than 22,000 children from both Protestant and
Catholic communities in Northern Ireland to America, uniting them with
over 15,000 American host families for a summer of peace and a lifetime
of friendship; and
WHEREAS, Denis Mulcahy, along with his brother, established the
program after immigrating to New York; since its inception in 1975, this
vital organization has given these children a break from the conflict
and politics of their country and a chance to experience the joys of
youth; and
WHEREAS, The heart and soul of Project Children, Denis Mulcahy's
extraordinary dedication to peace and understanding has made a tangible
difference in the lives of many individuals throughout both the United
States and Northern Ireland; and
WHEREAS, A nonprofit all-volunteer organization, Project Children has
fostered countless friendships and serves as an example of the power of
peace and reconciliation efforts at the grassroots level, as well as the
power of individual leadership exemplified by Denis Mulcahy; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his unwavering dedication to Project Children,
Denis Mulcahy serves as a Charter Member and outgoing President of the
Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society; he volunteers his time and ener-
gy to Habitat for Humanity, helping to rebuild homes destroyed by
natural disasters, and has been nominated on three occasions to receive
the Nobel Peace Prize; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Miriam, their four
children, and grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Denis Mulcahy has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Denis Mulcahy has displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Denis Mulcahy upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of Ireland on
March 12, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Denis Mulcahy.
