LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Educational Alliance Co-op Village
Naturally Occurring Retirement Community upon the occasion of its 20th
Annual Benefit Dinner, and paying tribute to this year's honorees
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those illus-
trious organizations of the State of New York whose purposeful endeavors
serve to enhance the quality of life for the cherished senior citizens
in their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Educa-
tional Alliance Co-op Village Naturally Occurring Retirement Community
upon the occasion of its 20th Annual Benefit Dinner to be held on Tues-
day, June 2, 2015, at the Manny Cantor Center; and
WHEREAS, The 2015 Guest of Honor is Don West, Community Liaison and
President of the 7th Precinct Community Council; in addition, Herb Zolty
will receive the Senior Service Award and Maryanne Algerio will be the
recipient of the Volunteer Award; and
WHEREAS, Co-op Village NORC located at 465 Grand Street, provides
adults 60 years and older living in the Co-ops along Grand Street and
East Broadway with a wide range of social, fitness, educational, and
recreational, arts and cultural programs to choose from, all of which
promote healthy aging for all participants; and
WHEREAS, The NORC, in conjunction with its partners, assists senior
residents in successfully "aging in place" by providing opportunities to
engage in the community and by offering vital support services; and
WHEREAS, Along with an array of classes, the NORC provides social work
and nursing services; assistance offered include obtaining entitlements
and benefits, homecare, supportive counseling, and access to emergency
alarm response systems and much more; and
WHEREAS, Don West was selected as the Guest of Honor in recognition of
all of the help he has brought to the NORC over the years including
helping to found the NORC, as a devoted member of the planning commit-
tee, and his vast knowledge of and networks within the Grand Street and
Co-op community; and
WHEREAS, Educational Alliance Co-op Village NORC, locally known as
"The Edgies," is under the able leadership of its Executive Director,
Alan Van Cappelle; furthermore, Anita Altman is affectionately called
the mother of the NORCs; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, The 20th Annual Benefit Dinner is an excellent opportunity to
recognize the special contributions of the Educational Alliance Co-op
Village NORC and all of the dedicated individuals who strive to better
the quality of life for senior citizens in the community; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Educational Alliance Co-op Village Naturally Occurring
Retirement Community upon the occasion of its 20th Annual Benefit
Dinner, and to pay tribute to this year's honorees; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alan Van Cappelle, Executive Director, Educational Alliance
Co-op Village Naturally Occurring Retirement Community; and Don West,
Herb Zolty, and Maryanne Algerio.
