MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
September 8, 2017, as Stand Up To Cancer Day in the
State of New York
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious
illnesses that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim September 8, 2017, as
Stand Up To Cancer Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National Stand Up To Cancer Day; and
WHEREAS, Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is a groundbreaking initiative
created to accelerate innovative cancer research that will get new
therapies to patients quickly and save lives now; and
WHEREAS, SU2C's mission is to raise funds to accelerate the pace of
groundbreaking translational research; and
WHEREAS, SU2C brings together the best and the brightest researchers
and mandates collaboration among the cancer community; and
WHEREAS, By galvanizing the entertainment industry, SU2C has set out
to generate awareness, educate the public on cancer prevention and help
more people diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors; and
WHEREAS, Founded on May 28, 2008, SU2C funds pledged since its
inception total more than $481 million, and the number of scientists
participating in SU2C-funded research is over 1,200; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 170 clinical trials funded by SU2C
which are planned, initiated or completed; and the patients enrolled in
SU2C supported clinical trials exceed 9,000; and
WHEREAS, The number of institutions joining in SU2C's collaborative
mission is more than 140 and the number of people in the United States
who were diagnosed with cancer today is approximately 4,544; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this
serious disease, and more must be done to increase activity at the
local, State and National levels; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim September 8, 2017, as
Stand Up To Cancer Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
