HONORING Everett White in recognition of his
prompt and heroic actions in saving the life of a
woman who was choking
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those exemplary citizens who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations and in doing so,
help others to avert life-threatening danger; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Everett White in recognition of his prompt and heroic actions in saving
the life of a 77-year old woman who was choking on a piece of food; and
WHEREAS, Everett White, who serves as Chief of the Pawling Fire
Department, was in attendance at a holiday celebration with family and
friends on December 24, 2016, when he learned of a woman at the
gathering who had become distressed when a piece of food lodged in her
airway; and
WHEREAS, After confirming the woman could not breathe, Everett White
removed her from the crowded kitchen; he tried to clear the airway but
the woman went limp; he immediately began the Heimlich maneuver; and
WHEREAS, After successful administration of the Heimlich, the woman
resumed breathing and medics determined that no further action was
required; and
WHEREAS, Everett White, in his spontaneous and heroic act, has so
aptly demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of
others, personifying, by virtue of his action, the collective concern of
citizens across the community of New York State who voluntarily respond
without thought of danger or reward when others are in need of help;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Everett White in recognition of his heroic action in saving the
life of a choking victim, noting the significance of his immediate and
unconditional response to come to the aid of another in a
life-threatening situation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Everett White.
