COMMENDING Detective Tanya Duhaney upon the
occasion of being named Person of the Year by the
Guardians Association of the New York City Police
Department on March 3, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize
and honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote
themselves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence
in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Detective
Tanya Duhaney upon the occasion of being named Person of the Year by the
Guardians Association of the New York City Police Department, to be
celebrated at its 43rd Annual Dinner Dance on Friday, March 3, 2017, at
Antun's, in Queens Village, New York; and

WHEREAS, The New York City Guardians Association, the largest and
oldest African-American fraternal organization in the New York City
Police Department, strives to develop a spirit of brotherhood and good
fellowship among its members, the members of the entire Department and
the community it serves; and encourage fuller participation in the
activities of organizations existent within the Police Department; and

WHEREAS, This vital association also promotes equal opportunity for
appointment, assignment, and promotion for all members of the Police
Department; encourages exemplary deportment by its members and the
respect and good will of the people of their city; and encourages
members to thoroughly familiarize themselves with the prescribed,
authorized and accepted practice and procedures of law enforcement, and
forensic presentation to the end that they will be able to serve their
city in a more courteous, intelligent and efficient manner; as well as
upholds and defends the Constitutions of the United States and the State
of New York at all times; and

WHEREAS, Born and raised in Queens, New York, Tanya Duhaney grew up
in Springfield Gardens, one of the many neighborhoods covered by the
113th Precinct; she attended both PS 37 and IS 231 schools, and
graduated from Far Rockaway High School; and

WHEREAS, After graduation, Tanya Duhaney earned her degree from the
John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1992; shortly thereafter, she
realized her dream of becoming a police officer; and

WHEREAS, Tanya Duhaney began her field training with the NYPD in
2001; the following year, she began her career as an officer with the
104th Precinct, patrolling the streets of her assigned sector; and

WHEREAS, One year later, Tanya Duhaney began to patrol the streets
of her hometown with the 113th Precinct; after six years, she
transferred to the NYPD School Unit where she worked directly with
students in several of the Southeast Queens schools; and

WHEREAS, After six years of service as a School Unit officer, Tanya
Duhaney was asked to join the Community Affairs Department, where she
has held the esteemed rank of Detective; in this capacity, she has been
instrumental in bringing back community policing which has instilled a
sense of trust between the citizens of the 113th Precinct and the
police; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due
full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Detective Tanya Duhaney upon the occasion of being named Person
of the Year by the Guardians Association of the New York City Police
Department; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Detective Tanya Duhaney.
