HONORING Millie Glaberman upon the occasion of
being selected as the 2018 Retiree of the Year by
New York State United Teachers

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens of New York State who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Millie Glaberman upon the occasion of being selected as the 2018 Retiree
of the Year by New York State United Teachers; and

WHEREAS, Millie Glaberman has distinguished herself as not only a
superb teacher to many, including to current United States Senate
Minority Leader Charles Schumer, but also as a committed union activist
throughout her tenure; and

WHEREAS, Her involvement in the strike leading to the creation of
the United Federation of Teachers in 1960 began a long history of
dedication to activism that she continues to this day; and

WHEREAS, Millie Glaberman maintains her leadership and hard work in
the United Federation of Teachers Retired Teachers chapter, providing
guidance and active participation in speaking out on behalf of
education, students, and teachers in New York State; and

WHEREAS, Her effort is exemplified by the 22,000 calls placed by her
chapter last year on an important state ballot initiative, and this
exists as only the latest testament to her skill and passion; and

WHEREAS, Throughout her time as a teacher, she participated in the
United Federation of Teachers, acted as a liaison to the Central Labor
Council, served as the Manhattan political action coordinator in 1978,
and merited no less than five proclamations from Manhattan borough
presidents; and

WHEREAS, She now participates as the political action coordinator
for her chapter of retired teachers, guiding phone bank volunteer
recruitment, topic research, and script writing as needed and often
exceeding expectation of that which is required; and

WHEREAS, This is a well-deserved honor for a woman who has married
expertise and passion to better serve New Yorkers her entire working
life, while also providing a quality education to students the whole
time without fail; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Millie Glaberman upon the occasion of being selected as the 2018
Retiree of the Year by New York State United Teachers, and to applaud
her for all she has done and continues to do on behalf of the State and
those who dwell within; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Millie Glaberman.
