Senate Resolution No. 5892
BY: Senator COMRIE
MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
July 1, 2018, as Postal Worker Day in the State of
New York
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes great pride in participating in
days of awareness of those vital professions that affect the quality of
life for the many New Yorkers throughout this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 1, 2018, as Postal
Worker Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance
of National Postal Worker Day; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1997 by a Seattle-area carrier who wanted to
honor fellow employees, National Postal Worker Day is celebrated
annually on July 1st; it is a day to appreciate and thank the numerous
men and women who work consistently and diligently to deliver all of our
mail and packages; and
WHEREAS, There are approximately 490,000 postal workers across the
United States who work in all kinds of weather including extreme heat
and cold, rain and sleet and blizzards, yet continue to persevere six
days a week; across the United States, postal workers walk an average of
four to eight miles carrying a full load of letters and packages and
delivering them promptly to each of our doorsteps; and
WHEREAS, Besides severe weather, postal workers have dealt with
unusual packages; in 1913, the postal service started delivering
packages up to a maximum 11 pounds; the most surprising package to
arrive for delivery was a small child who was mailed at a cost of 15
cents to his grandmother just a few miles away; this practice continued
for just over a year until the postmaster general was able to put
regulations in place prohibiting it; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, representing the
people of the State of New York, to bring awareness to postal workers
and the essential role they play in the everyday life of all citizens;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 1, 2018, as Postal
Worker Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
