COMMENDING Katia Guillaume upon the occasion of
being named a 2019 Hall of Fame Honoree by Making
the Impossible Possible, Inc. on May 26, 2019

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Katia Guillaume upon the occasion of being named a 2019 Hall of
Fame Honoree by Making the Impossible Possible, Inc., to be celebrated
at its 8th Annual Power of Partnerships, Scholarship and Hall of Fame
Gala on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at the BRIC Arts Media, Brooklyn, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 2001, Making the Impossible Possible, Inc.
(MIPO) is a non-profit membership organization, promoting the quality of
life of Haitian youth in the United States and abroad through education,
music, character building, medical care, apprenticeship training, family
support and scholarships; and

WHEREAS, Katia Guillaume's roots into community organizing began in
1990 when she participated in the march across the Brooklyn Bridge to
stand against racism, and the impact of HIV stigma on the Haitian
community; and

WHEREAS, In 1994, Katia Guillaume became a member of 1199SEIU, the
largest healthcare union in the United States; she thrived as a
delegate, setting the stage to become a voice for voiceless through
actions against work place injustices; and

WHEREAS, In 2005, Katia Guillaume became an 1199SEIU Organizer in
the Home Care Division, another phase in her life where she honed her
skills; while vacationing in Haiti in 2010, she survived the devastating
earthquake that killed thousands; it was then she reached a realization
that she must extend her activism to the Haitian community at large,
empower Haiti, a country in dire need of support and empathy, to
overcome tragedy and once again become the pearl of the Antilles; and

WHEREAS, In recent years, 1199SEIU has contributed to improving the
standard of living for working New York City residents; and

WHEREAS, Currently, Katia Guillaume has been nominated for the
position of Vice-President of an area in the division; she looks forward
to continuing the fight against social, economic, systemic and
prejudicial injustices; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent

of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Katia Guillaume, that future generations may know and appreciate her
admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Katia Guillaume upon the occasion of being named a 2019 Hall of
Fame Honoree by Making the Impossible Possible, Inc. on May 26, 2019;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Katia Guillaume.
