COMMENDING Edward N. Shaw posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Edward N.
Shaw posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate, to be celebrated at the Saratoga County Honor A
Veteran Program on Tuesday, February 26, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Edward N. Shaw was born on December 13, 1913, in Hadley,
New York; he attended Hadley-Luzerne High School, graduating with the
Class of 1932; and
WHEREAS, On May 14, 1942, Edward N. Shaw enlisted in the United
States Army and trained with Company C 26th Infantry Training Battalion
before proudly serving his country as a member of the Wire Section of
the Headquarters Company Infantry Regiment; and
WHEREAS, This brave soldier served in Normandy, Northern France and
Rhineland; and
WHEREAS, For his courageous service during World War II, Edward N.
Shaw was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Badge, European
African Ribbon, Overseas Bars (4), Expert Infantry Badge Good Conduct
Ribbon, Oak Leaf Cluster, and Ribbon with 3 battle stars; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service on September
22, 1945, at the rank of Private First Class, Edward N. Shaw graduated
from Veterans Vocational School of Troy in 1947, with an Electrical
Construction and Maintenance 1 degree; and
WHEREAS, Edward N. Shaw worked as an electrician at Eggelston's
Hardware in Lake Luzerne until 1964; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, Edward N. Shaw was a member of the
Hadley VFW Post No. 5836; and
WHEREAS, Edward N. Shaw died on February 25, 1970, at the age of 56;
and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Edward N. Shaw demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Edward N. Shaw posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Edward N. Shaw.
