COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of T. Schreiber
Studios on March 25, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and pay
tribute to those cultural institutions and organizations whose
commitment to promoting the richness and diversity of the arts and
entertainment world has contributed to the strength, vitality, and
cultural enrichment of their communities and the great State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of T. Schreiber Studios on Monday,
March 25, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The T. Schreiber Studio began in 1969, with Terry Schreiber
teaching classes twice a week to 12 actors in a converted loft on the
Upper East Side of New York City; as enrollment increased, the group
began mounting productions in what was the beginning of New York City's
Off-Off Broadway movement and building its reputation of high quality
productions and performances; and
WHEREAS, In the 1970s, the studio continued to grow, adding more
faculty, more actors and more plays; during this time, drama critic
Walter Kerr's glowing review in the New York Times of Schreiber's
production of The Trip Back Down, brought the studio much attention and
packed houses; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, T. Schreiber
Studio continued to produce good actors and theatre, and the studio
moved to East 4th Street, the burgeoning street of Off-Off Broadway; and
WHEREAS, During that time Terry Schreiber, continued his own
directing career with two more Broadway shows: Devour the Snow and K-2,
as well as numerous regional theatre productions, providing more casting
opportunities for studio actors; and
WHEREAS, T. Schreiber Studio moved to a renovated multi-use space on
the 7th floor of 151 West 26th Street in New York's lively Chelsea
neighborhood in 1996; in September of 2017, the studio moved its
operations to the 10th floor of the same building; and
WHEREAS, Today, T. Schreiber Studio offers full and part-time
programs in beginning, intermediate, and advanced acting, private acting
coaches, youth programs, intensives and conservatories; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, T. Schreiber Studio has been committed
to the development of vital artists in theatre, film and television,
providing an environment which nourishes artists throughout their
careers while constantly engaging new audiences; and
WHEREAS, Notable alumni of T. Schreiber include: Edward Norton,
Julia Garner, Peter Sarsgaard, Jonny Orsini, Gabrielle Carteris, Zoe
Kravitz, playwright and screenwriter Jane Anderson, Annabelle Sciorra,
Debra Jo Rupp, and Julie Halston along with many of today's working
actors; and
WHEREAS, Starting out alongside Marshall Mason and Circle Repertory
Company, San Shepard and Cafe Cino, Ellen Lewis and La MaMa, Terry and
T. Schreiber Studio are the last surviving pioneers of Off-Off
Broadway; and
WHEREAS, The arts are the building blocks of civilization; they are
central to human expression; they enlighten us and inspire the
imagination; individuals and organizations which further such worthy
purposes richly merit the recognition and appreciation of this
Legislative Body and the people of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, As the T. Schreiber Studio looks back with great pride to
its beginnings, viewing, with just satisfaction, its successful
evolution, it renews both its dedication to supporting artistic
excellence, and its commitment to the community it has served since
1969, expressing its appreciation to all those who have helped to
sustain and enhance it over the years; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of T. Schreiber Studios on March 25,
2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Terry Schreiber, T. Schreiber Studio.
