COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of the
Brooklyn Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Chapter of the
American Institute of Architects; and

WHEREAS, The Brooklyn Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects (AIA Brooklyn) was founded in 1894; it began as a Committee
in the Institute of Arts and Sciences, which is now The Brooklyn Museum;
and

WHEREAS, Since its inception, AIA Brooklyn has had 64 distinguished
presidents and members; and

WHEREAS, For more than six decades, AIA Brooklyn has maintained and
encouraged the highest standards of professional architectural knowledge
and ethical behavior among its members; and

WHEREAS, Members of AIA Brooklyn have participated in public
service, both paid and unpaid, to assist in community planning and
design projects; and

WHEREAS, AIA Brooklyn, from the beginning, has been a significant
voice for building codes that protect the health, safety and welfare of
the public; and

WHEREAS, In 1951, AIA Brooklyn formed the Brooklyn Architects
Scholarship Foundation, an allied non-profit corporation, aimed at
raising scholarship grants for deserving students of architecture; to
date, it has assisted hundreds of students of architecture; and

WHEREAS, AIA Brooklyn, committed to advancing the knowledge of its
members and the public, provides walking tours of Brooklyn to enhance
the appreciation of the architecture of Brooklyn and its many
neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, AIA Brooklyn has sponsored Design Awards
Programs to honor architects who have done exceptional work; and

WHEREAS, AIA Brooklyn also produces a newsletter, PYLON, for its
members and the interested public; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a

long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Chapter of the
American Institute of Architects; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects.
