Senate Resolution No. 1324

COMMENDING William John Satter posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend William
John Satter posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; his family will be presented
with this prestigious accolade at the Columbia County Honor a Veteran
program on Monday, October 18, 2021; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, William John Satter was born to Eugene and Marie (Schaible)
Satter on September 29, 1928, in Essex County, Newark, New Jersey, where
he attended Wainwright High School; after graduating, he lived at 75
Demarsest Street in Newark, and worked as an auto mechanic; and

WHEREAS, William John Satter was inducted into the United States
Army on January 23, 1951, and upon the completion of his basic training,
he received training in the field artillery; although he had a great
fear of heights, he completed jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia, and
earned the coveted Silver Jump Wings of a paratrooper; and

WHEREAS, Assigned to the First Army, Technical Sergeant William John
Satter proudly served his country with the AAA Battalion at Headquarters
Battery 150 in Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he was responsible for
maintaining the vehicles that transported field artillery; and

WHEREAS, For his exceptional service, Technical Sergeant William
John Satter was awarded the National Defense Ribbon, and on January 22,
1953, he completed his military service at Indiantown Gap Military
Reservation in Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, On August 2, 1952, William John Satter married the former
Veronica Frances McCormack, and together, they raised three children in
their home at 64 Wakeman Avenue in Newark; and

WHEREAS, For 25 years, William John Satter served as an officer with
the Newark Police Department, earning numerous citations of commendation
for his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his profession and
community; and

WHEREAS, William John Satter then owned and operated Sattery
Security for 15 years before retiring in 1996; and

WHEREAS, As a resident of Columbia County, William John Satter was a
vital member of the American Legion in Philmont, New York; and

WHEREAS, William John Satter died on November 19, 2009, at the age
of 80, and was survived by his three children, five grandchildren, and
two great grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, William John Satter truly demonstrated his love for his
country and merits forevermore the highest respect of his State and
Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend William John Satter posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of William John Satter.
