Senate Resolution No. 1607

MOURNING the death of Abraham Schumer, World War
II veteran, distinguished citizen and devoted member
of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Abraham Schumer of Floral Park, New York, died on
Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at the age of 98; and
WHEREAS, Born on June 14, 1923, Abraham "Abe" Schumer, the father of
United States Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, personified the
greatest generation; he took whatever was thrown at him no matter how
difficult, did his job, and never complained; and
WHEREAS, During World War II, Abraham Schumer proudly served his
country in the Pacific theater as a radar operator in planes that flew
over the Himalayas; and
WHEREAS, After the war, Abraham Schumer returned to Brooklyn where
he took over a small exterminating business from his father in order to
support his family; and
WHEREAS, Abraham Schumer distinguished himself in his profession and
by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, Abraham Schumer is survived by his devoted wife of 72
years, Selma (Rosen) Schumer; and his three children, Charles, Fran and
Robert; in addition to being an amazing husband and father, he was a
loving grandfather and great-grandfather; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Abraham Schumer leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; he will be deeply missed and truly merits the
grateful tribute of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Abraham Schumer, and to express its deepest
condolences to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Abraham Schumer.
