Senate Resolution No. 1662

COMMENDING Hospital Corpsman 3-C Alfred David
Trombly posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peace-time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Hospital
Corpsman 3-C Alfred David Trombly upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; he was nominated for this
prestigious award by the Reverend Francis A. Kelley Society which
diligently works to honor and care for our local everyday heroes and
educate the community about their valorous and sacrificial acts both on
and off the battlefield; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, Born on February 20, 1931, to the late Alfred and Ethel
(Simonds) Trombly in Troy, New York. Alfred D. "Buster" Trombly proudly
served his country as a Navy Hospital Corpsman with the 2nd Battalion,
Seventh Marines, First Marine Division during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, On June 8, 1951, Hospital Corpsman Alfred D. Trombly and
his company advanced into enemy terrain when the unit was subjected to
an extensive barrage of enemy mortar and artillery fire causing numerous
casualties; despite a grave leg wound and without regard for his own
safety, he diligently crawled through the onslaught and calmly
administered first aid to his comrades; and

WHEREAS, As the enemy fire intensified, Hospital Corpsman Alfred D.
Trombly bravely used his own body as a shield to protect two wounded
comrades, taking shrapnel to his back; even with his extensive injuries,
he continued to help those in need, refusing aid for himself until
everyone else around him had been properly treated; and

WHEREAS, For his courageous and selfless actions, Hospital Corpsman
Alfred D. Trombly was awarded the Purple Heart and the Navy Cross, the
branch's highest honor, for his extraordinary heroism in connection with
military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, In addition to these prestigious, well-deserved honors,
Hospital Corpsman Alfred D. Trombly was the recipient of the Korean
Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service
Medal, Good Conduct Medal, New York Medal for Merit and the New York

State Conspicuous Service Cross; he was also inducted into the National
Purple Heart Hall of Honor; and

WHEREAS, Upon his release from military duty, Alfred D. Trombly
returned to Rensselaer County and worked as a rigging supervisor with
the Watervliet Arsenal, retiring in 1977, after 30 years of service; and

WHEREAS, During this time, Alfred D. Trombly married his wife Ann
(Bonville) and together, they raised two daughters, Nadine and Michele,
and one son, David C. in Green Island, New York; later, he enjoyed
spending time with his beloved grandchildren; on June 9, 1997, he passed
away after an 18-month battle with cancer at the age of 66; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Hospital Corpsman 3-C Alfred D. Trombly demonstrated his love for his
country and merits forevermore the highest respect of his State and
Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Hospital Corpsman 3-C Alfred David Trombly posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Hospital Corpsman 3-C Alfred David Trombly.
