HONORING Monica Alexandris-Miller posthumously
upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the Glen Cove Council of PTAs on
March 5, 2022
WHEREAS, The unity of our State and Nation is built upon the
compassion of individuals, such as Monica Alexandris-Miller who upheld
the values of community life and who, through their great actions,
epitomized the best of humanity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Monica
Alexandris-Miller posthumously upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the Glen Cove Council of PTAs to be celebrated at
its annual Scholarship Dinner on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at the Sea
Cliff Yacht Club in Sea Cliff, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Glen Cove Council of PTAs honors members of
its community who have been dedicated and committed to the community,
schools, and children of Glen Cove, New York; Monica Alexandris-Miller
was one such individual; and
WHEREAS, Born in Rockville Center, New York, Monica
Alexandris-Miller attended elementary school in Uniondale before moving
to Hicksville, where she completed elementary, middle, and high school;
and
WHEREAS, In a display of hard work and commitment, Monica
Alexandris-Miller graduated high school in 1993 among the top five
students in her class, during which time she was also a member of the
Key Club, Yearbook Committee, Ecology Club, Peer Counseling, French
Club, French Honors Society, National Honor Society, National Science
Olympiad and Mock Trial; and
WHEREAS, Monica Alexandris-Miller graduated from Wesleyan University
in 1997, receiving a bachelor's degree in Government; she later received
a Master of Public Administration from New York University's Robert F.
Wagner School of Public Service in 2003, further proving her commitment
to hard work and education; and
WHEREAS, While completing her collegiate studies, this extraordinary
woman volunteered at a student listening service which helped students
in need of working through difficult emotions and feelings, and
co-directed a community service house which, at the time, was the
largest donation drive on campus; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, gaining valuable leadership skills and work
experience, Monica Alexandris-Miller held various internship positions
during her undergraduate studies, working in the Supervisor's Office in
the Town of Oyster Bay, the Children's Rights Council in Washington
D.C., and the Families and Work Institute in New York City; while
pursuing her master's degree, she interned with the County Executive
offices of Nassau County; and
WHEREAS, Monica Alexandris-Miller went on to work for the New York
City Law Department along with other law offices, most notably, the
Leeds, Morelli and Brown firm as a Civil Rights Paralegal working on a
civil rights class action suit; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, she began her illustrious career with The
Freelancers Union where she rose to a director-level position, the
esteemed role which she officially retired from in 2015 to spend more
time with her family and friends; the foundational goal of the Union is
to provide affordable health insurance to freelance workers among other
important services; and
WHEREAS, Monica and her beloved husband, Brett Miller, were united
in marriage in 2005, and shortly thereafter moved to Glen Cove where
they raised their three cherished daughters; and
WHEREAS, Always striving to strengthen her local community and
schools, Monica Alexandris-Miller was a devoted and active member of the
Glen Cove Council of PTAs where she was instrumental in the success of
countless fundraisers and regularly attended board meetings;
additionally, she ran for a seat on the Board of Education and was
elected in 2017; she ran again in 2020, becoming President of the Board
of Education; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her life of service, whether it be with active
participation in clubs and organizations in high school and college, her
work with government agencies and internships, volunteerism with
non-profit organizations, or through her elected positions, Monica
Alexandris-Miller never wavered in her commitment to the betterment of
the people and places around her through community and public service;
her intellect, compassion and strength will forever serve as a beacon of
love, light and hope to the countless lives she touched; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Monica Alexandris-Miller posthumously upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the Glen Cove Council of PTAs;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Monica Alexandris-Miller.
