COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the
Dansville Rotary Club

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Dansville Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, The world's first service club, Rotary International, was
founded on February 23, 1905, when Paul Harris, a native of Vermont,
found himself a stranger in the city of Chicago; he conceived the idea
of inviting three men of different vocations to join him weekly for
fellowship and to discuss each other's problems and business; and

WHEREAS, Today, Rotary International has grown into an organization
including over 1.2 million members in approximately 29,000 clubs across
163 countries; Rotary defines itself as a service organization made up
of business and professional leaders who conduct humanitarian projects,
encourage high ethical standards and work towards world understanding
and peace; and

WHEREAS, The Dansville Rotary Club, currently consisting of 39
members, was chartered by the Elmira Rotary Club in 1922, making it the
51st club established; the first meeting was held at the Foster Hotel in
Dansville and established its first community project to be the
construction of a new playground and swimming pool which was initially
named Rotary Field, and today is called Babcock Park; and

WHEREAS, Spreading the goals and mission of the Rotary, the
Dansville Rotary Club has sponsored three clubs: Perry, New York in
1924, Geneseo, New York in 1925, and Nunda, New York in 1928; and

WHEREAS, In the true spirit of giving, recent projects of the
Dansville Rotary Club include the pledge to help renovate the third
floor of the University of Rochester Noyes Hospital, a project to expand
services for children receiving day care and after school services at
the Four Square Church, and the "Stove Top" project which will provide
cooking stoves to families in need in underdeveloped countries to aid in
providing healthier air quality in the home and to allow for the burning
of up to 50 percent less wood while cooking; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to their community, the Dansville Rotary Club
hosts Roadside Cleanup Day, the New York State Balloon Festival, a High
School Basketball Tip Off Tournament and Trivia Night annually; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by

all the citizens of this great Empire State for their achievements; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Dansville Rotary Club; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Dansville Rotary Club.
