MOURNING the death of John P. Scanlon, renowned
public servant, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community
WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of John P. Scanlon, a preeminent citizen whose
distinguished public service and caring commitment will long serve as a
standard to which others might aspire; and
WHEREAS, John P. Scanlon, of South Buffalo, New York, passed away on
Thursday, April 28, 2022, at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, A native of the Old First Ward in Buffalo, John P.
"Scanoots" Scanlon served as one of the late four-term Mayor James D.
Griffin's top lieutenants; in this role, he diligently worked to make
his community a better place to live, work and play; and
WHEREAS, After Mayor Griffin left office, John P. Scanlon brought
his many years of experience and knowledge with him to the office of the
incoming Mayor, Anthony M. Masiello; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 2, 1938, to the late John and Loretta
(Bannister) Scanlon, John P. Scanlon attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help
School where he first developed his considerable basketball skills; he
proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army;
stationed in Germany, he was assigned to the Army's Berlin Bears
Basketball Team and played basketball throughout Europe; and
WHEREAS, In 1965, John P. Scanlon married the former Paula Kuntz,
and together, they raised seven children in his hometown of Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
community, John P. Scanlon was named Grand Marshal of the 2009 Old
Neighborhood Parade; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his parents, and one sister, Betty Scanlon,
John P. Scanlon is survived by his wife, Paula; one daughter, Kara; six
sons, John M., Mark (Amanda), Michael (Jeanne), Brian, Christopher
(Katie), and Patrick (Sinead); six grandchildren, Connall (Jessica),
Thomas, Elizabeth, Adelaide, Siobhan, and Coraline; one
great-grandchild, Lyla Keane; two sisters, Mary Grandy and Ann Parot;
and one brother, James (Janet), as well as numerous other family
members, friends and colleagues who will long cherish his memory; and
WHEREAS, John P. Scanlon was sincerely loved and greatly respected
by all those with whom he worked; committed to his community, he served
the public with dignity, dedication and incisive wisdom; and
WHEREAS, Over a long and meritorious life of service on behalf of
others, John P. Scanlon was a man of action, of integrity, and of
commitment, whose true compassion was generously given to all who knew
him; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
benevolence, John P. Scanlon leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of The Honorable John P. Scanlon, renowned public
servant, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of The Honorable John P. Scanlon.
