CONGRATULATING Daniel E. Barry Jr. upon the
occasion of his retirement after 58 years of
distinguished service to the Legal Aid Bureau of
Buffalo

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those singular individuals who devote their purposeful
lives and careers to preserving the rights and protecting the welfare of
the citizens of their community and the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Daniel E. Barry Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement
after 58 years of distinguished service to the Legal Aid Bureau of
Buffalo; and

WHEREAS, Daniel E. Barry Jr. put himself through college and law
school, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of
Buffalo in 1962; and

WHEREAS, Daniel E. Barry Jr. began his illustrious career with the
Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo as an attorney assisting low income
individuals in civil proceedings; he became a founding member of the
Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo's Public Defender Office in 1963; and

WHEREAS, This extraordinary man went on to become the Chief of the
Public Defender Office for more than three decades before stepping down;
and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, Daniel E. Barry Jr. became a zealous advocate
for protecting the rights of indigent suspects to an attorney,
recognizing that even the smallest cases are huge in the lives of those
affected; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his esteemed career, Daniel E. Barry Jr. was
awarded the Wilfred R. O'Connor Award by the New York State Defenders
Association in 2008, a Certificate of Commendation to commemorate his
five decades of service with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo in 2012,
and the Michele Maxian Award for Outstanding Public Defense Practitioner
in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with
whom he worked, Daniel E. Barry Jr. will be remembered for his honesty,
integrity, keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of
human problems in his official acts; and

WHEREAS, Daniel E. Barry Jr., in every capacity in which he served,
has left his permanent mark on the criminal justice community and will
forever be remembered as a determined, innovative and genuinely
concerned expert in his field; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Daniel E. Barry Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement

after 58 years of distinguished service as a public defender, and to
wish him well in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Daniel E. Barry Jr.
