CELEBRATING the life of Donald H. Roth,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community
WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Donald H. Roth, an extraordinary gentleman
of indomitable faith and dedication whose purposeful life will long
serve as a standard to which others might aspire; and
WHEREAS, Donald H. Roth, a lifelong resident of Lynbrook, New York,
passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Lynbrook High School, Donald H. Roth was a
star baseball player; as a senior pitcher, he was selected to play in
the Nassau County Baseball All-County First Team; and
WHEREAS, Donald H. Roth then earned a baseball scholarship to play
for the Demon Deacons at Wake Forest University in North Carolina; he
was a starting pitcher on the 1962 Wake Forest Baseball Team, winning
the ACC Championship; and
WHEREAS, After earning his bachelor's degree, Donald H. Roth went on
to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his
master's degree in education and became a member of the ROTC; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his studies, this brave man enlisted
in the United States Army and admirably served his country as a First
Lieutenant during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, During this time, Donald H. Roth was assigned to the
Republic of South Korea where he was appointed Head Coach of the 7th
Infantry Division Baseball Team; he led the team to the 1965 and 1966
Eighth Army Command Baseball Championships and was subsequently named
Coach of the Year for both years by the Korean Bureau of the Pacific
Command Stars and Stripes newspaper; and
WHEREAS, Donald H. Roth began his illustrious career as a teacher
and coach in his hometown at Lynbrook High School in the fall of 1967;
and
WHEREAS, As a beloved teacher and coach, Donald H. Roth
distinguished himself in his profession and by his sincere dedication
and substantial contribution to the welfare of his community; he served
as President of the Nassau County Baseball Coaches Association during
the 1981 season; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Donald H. Roth earned many awards
and accolades for both his team members and himself, including a Diamond
Award and Michael Capozzi Award; additionally, several of his players
earned the distinction of being Nassau All-County players and New York
Daily News All Stars; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, Donald H. Roth completed his 26th season as Head
Varsity baseball coach; after an extraordinary career which traversed
more than three decades, he ranked in the top 10 for most wins among
active and inactive Varsity baseball coaches in Nassau County;
furthermore, two of his former players went on to sign professional
baseball contracts; and
WHEREAS, Donald H. Roth is survived by his daughter, Jane
(Prentice); his son, Timothy (Annmarie); and his four grandchildren,
Parker, Lily, Ashley and Kelsey; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Donald H. Roth leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the life of Donald H. Roth, and express its deepest condolences to
his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Donald H. Roth.
