COMMENDING Joseph R. Giello posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Joseph R.
Giello posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; this auspicious recognition will be celebrated at
the Schenectady County Honor-A-Veteran Ceremony on Saturday, September
24, 2022, at St. Luke's Pastoral Center, Schenectady, New York; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, Born on December 2, 1915, in Schenectady, New York, Joseph
R. Giello was one of six children born to Ralph Giello and Sadie
Poltorak; he attended Schenectady City Schools before proudly serving
his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army from June 12, 1939
until June 6, 1945; and

WHEREAS, For his courageous service during World War II, Joseph R.
Giello was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service
Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Western Pacific Campaign Medal, and the
American Defense Service Medal; and

WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Joseph R.
Giello went on to have an illustrious 25-year career with General
Electric, retiring in 1972; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to local
veterans, Joseph R. Giello was a Past Commander of Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post No. 357, National Commander of the 27th Division Association,
and Past Commander of Apple Knockers Post No. 105; he was also a member
of the American Legion Post No. 1002 and AMVETS Post No. 35; and

WHEREAS, Joseph R. Giello enjoyed fishing, hunting, car racing at
Fonda Speedway, and attending musical acts at Colonie Coliseum Tent; and

WHEREAS, While he was passionate about many things, above all his
greatest passion was spending time with his beloved wife, Philomena, and
their seven children, Rose, Phillip, Loretta, Michael, Joella, Joseph
Jr., and Robert, as well as their eight grandchildren, Courtney,
Brittany, Tiffany, Robert, Mark, Scott, Nadene and Ashley; and

WHEREAS, Joseph R. Giello died on July 4, 1992, at the age of 76;
and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who risked their
lives for their beloved Nation; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Joseph R. Giello demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Joseph R. Giello posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Joseph R. Giello.
