US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and NYS Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk hosted a roundtable discussion in Athens, Greene County on the issue facing local farmers and how the federal and state governments can better support their efforts.
Senator Gillibrand is the first New York Senator to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee in 40 years, and State Senator Tkaczyk is the only active farmer serving in the NY State Senate, and both are committed to increasing opportunities for farmers in New York and expanding the multi-billion dollar agricultural sector of the State’s economy.
They were joined by Sarah Williford from the NYS Beginning Women Farmer Program who talked about the specific challenges facing women farmers, such as increased difficulties in obtaining capital to start or improve their farms.
