Senator Montgomery and the Senate Democratic Conference meet with members of the NAACP on Albany Advocacy Day

Senator Montgomery, Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and members of the Senate Democratic Conference welcome President Dr. Hazel Dukes and members of the NAACP to Albany to discuss their social justice legislative agenda. NAACP members met with legislators to discuss issues including the 2020 Census, redistricting and criminal justice reform.

The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race. 

The 1908 deadly race riot in the city of Springfield, Illinois, was the final straw that led to the creation of the NAACP. Founded February 12, 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most widely recognized civil rights organization.

The NAACP has been in the forefront of every civil rights and social justice movement in the United States. The NAACP played a pivotal role in the fight to pass the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution, which promised an end to slavery, the equal protection of the law, and universal adult male suffrage, respectively.

Following in the footsteps of W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and Mary Church Terrell, Dr. Hazel Dukes continues the NAACP’s historic leadership to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality justice. The NAACP seeks to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes.
