Students from NYU Langone's School Health Programs visit Albany to fight for more funding for School Based Health Centers

Senator Montgomery proudly welcomed students from NYU Langone's School Health Programs to Albany to fight for  more funding for School Based Health Centers (SBHCs).

Senator Montgomery is a longtime supporter of SBHCs. School-based health centers are vital community health providers that work on the front lines to bring comprehensive primary medical care, dental care and mental health services to children and adolescents in the school setting where they spend at least one-third of their day. Recently, Senator Montgomery and 19 colleagues wrote to Governor Cuomo to urge him to include an additional $4 million in funds for School Based Health Centers in the 2018-19 proposed State Executive Budget. New York State has the most SBHCs in the nation and more than 2/3 of all SBHCs are located in New York City. The State’s 252 SBHCs provide primary and preventative care services to over 200,000 children in an environment that is convenient and familiar to them. Over 60% of SBHCs have fulltime mental health services, and many provide dental and vision services. SBHCs enable students to better manage chronic conditions such as asthma and type one diabetes and address on-site medical emergencies.

As one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) networks in the nation, the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone offers culturally sensitive services at nine primary care sites, 37 school based health/dental clinics and numerous social support services. With approximately 99,000 patients, the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone handles over 602,000 visits annually.
