Senator Anna M. Kaplan Presents The First Official Celebration of Nowruz in New York State - A Traditional Celebration of Persian New Year

As the first Persian-American member of the New York State Legislature, it is my distinct honor and privilege to share the traditions of Persian culture with my colleagues in State Government and with the people of New York State.

Nowruz, or “new day” in Persian, is an ancient festival that marks the beginning of spring, and celebrates the rebirth of nature.  This secular holiday is celebrated by thousands of New Yorkers each year, as families gather around the ceremonial table known as the haftseen, and cheer Eide Shoma Mobarak, or Happy New Year!

In an effort to share this beautiful tradition and expand cultural understanding, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and I will be hosting the first Official Celebration of Nowruz in the State Capital on March 20th, immediately following the Senate Session scheduled for 11am.  The reception will include a traditional haftseen table with its many colorful and symbolic elements, along a spread of tasty delights prepared by Persian bakers from the 7th Senate District.

All those interested in attending, please contact (516) 746-5924 to confirm attendance, as space is extremely limited.
