Senator Chan visits Brooklyn Studio School

BROOKLYN, NY— On Wednesday, July 30th, NYS Senator Stephen T. Chan made a visit with his interns to Brooklyn Studio Secondary School in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of South Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Studio Secondary School serves students in grades 6 through 12 and is home to a large population of immigrant families. The school also houses District 75 (D75) programs, which provide specialized instruction and support for students with learning disabilities. Despite its diverse and high-needs student body, the school continues to face serious challenges related to aging infrastructure and underfunding.

Senator Chan, accompanied by his interns, is welcomed by Principal Andrea Ciliotta and other members of the school staff. They were taken on a tour throughout the basement and first floor of the school, visiting numerous school facilities such as the cafeteria, classrooms, and library. Senator Chan is also seen interacting with students, who are currently taking lessons as part of the NYC Department of Education Summer Rising program.

It was noted that scaffolding and visible signs of aging infrastructure are present, as well as the lack of action to combat this issue despite student attempts to beautify the school interior. Principal Ciliotta further comments on the lack of parental involvement with the school, possibly due to their belief that their children are “safe” and are receiving the education that they need, that their involvement is unnecessary. This can also be due to immigration complications and language barriers, overall highlighting the need for increased parental involvement with student life and the need for increased funding for school resources.

The visit reflects Senator Chan’s ongoing commitment to ensuring all students, regardless of ability, background, or income, have access to a quality education. He continues to push for increased state funding to underserved schools, stronger support for special education, and deeper engagement between schools and the communities they serve.
