Op-ed: A cultural capital has to make room for the people who create it

For generations, people came to New York with a bag of belongings and a dream. They came to write, perform, design, compose, film, paint, choreograph, photograph, and build a life in the process. And they took day jobs, shared apartments, and worked odd hours to help make that dream happen. That steady flow of talent helped give this place its energy, its edge, and its unmistakable character.
