A new state law aimed at streamlining the administration of New York State's school property tax relief program, commonly known as STAR, while at the same time helping to prevent fraud within the program, requires current Basic STAR enrollees to re-register in order to continue receiving their benefit.

The new requirement does not affect senior citizen homeowners, 65 years of age and older, who are enrolled and currently receive the state's Enhanced STAR benefit.

STAR currently saves the average household $700 annually.

Important Note: The deadline to re-register is December 31, 2013.

Homeowners can re-register online at www.tax.ny.gov or by calling a special STAR hotline, (518) 457-2036 (the hotline is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm).
