Rob Ortt would give SUNY and CUNY schools the option of awarding credit to volunteer firefighters or ambulatory workers who audit classes.

The decrease in the number of volunteer firefighters could cause delays in responding to emergencies, and could put the public’s safety at risk. To spark more interest and bolster numbers, Senator Ortt has sponsored a bill (S3125) that would allow SUNY and CUNY schools to offer job-related classes to volunteer firefighters for free. The bill also applies to voluntary ambulance workers. Passage of the bill would help retain current active members, recruit new ones and help them advance professionally. The bill is being reviewed by the state’s Committee on Higher Education. Read the full article in the Niagara Gazette.
