Lanza's appointment was announced Tuesday by Senate Republican Majority Leader John Flanagan.

Lanza was vice chairman last year of the Codes Committee, the committee through which criminal justice legislation must pass before it can reach the floor of the Senate.

Lanza is a Fordham University School of Law graduate who was once an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. He was elected to the Senate in 2006.

Nozzolio, a Republican from Seneca Falls, retired in 2016 after 24 years.

Flanagan also announced that Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican from Mount Hope, will remain as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said the longtime chairs of the Codes and Judiciary committees in his chamber, Brooklyn Democrats Joseph Lentol and Helene Weinstein, respectively, have been reappointed to their committee posts for the 2017-18 legislative session.
