Kaminsky discusses environmental conservation goals for upcoming session

ALBANY — State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, the incoming chair of the environmental conservation committee, said he wants to hold hearings on a measure to enshrine emissions reduction goals into law, but is open to making changes to a measure environmentalists have been pushing for years to no avail.

The Climate and Community Protection Act will be the main vehicle for lawmakers to take action on the most important priority for Kaminsky: addressing climate change, he said. The bill has broad support within the environmental community but business groups have raised concerns about cost and feasibility.

“We basically have been having climate deniers for the most part control the Senate for a long time and with inaction in Washington, we really don’t have time to lose,” Kaminsky said. “We need to be aggressive and we need to act quickly, but we need to be thoughtful.”
