ALBANY — A new group has formed to push voting reform in New York.

Called AVR NOW, the group will focus on passage of state legislation creating automatic voter registration.

Fifteen states, including New Jersey and Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C., have approved automatic voter registration.

A poll commissioned by AVR NOW found that 64% of likely voters supported the concept of automatic voter registration, including a majority in all but two of the 63 state Senate districts across the state.

“At a time in our country when voting rights are under assault, New York must live up to its potential as a progressive leader,” said incoming Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris (D-Queens). “Access to the ballot box should be easy and fair, and enacting automatic voter registration would go a long way towards improving our democracy.”
