Rajkumar is the first Punjabi person elected to New York State office. She recently passed legislation designating April Punjabi Awareness month in New York.

Punjab is a region in India, and Punjabi people are members of the ethnic group from that area. Sikhism is the most prevalent religion in Punjab, though the region is home to Hindus, Muslims, Christians and other religions as well.

Jaspreet Singh, a staff attorney with United Sikhs, estimated there were about 80,000 Sikhs living in New York City, in a 2010 interview with WNYC.
