New legislation allows Syracuse Airport to create its own police force

Governor Hochul signed new legislation Thursday that authorizes the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority to create and maintain its own police force, in order to improve security operations and solve staffing issues.
The Syracuse Police Department currently patrols Syracuse Airport, including at TSA checkpoints. However, staffing issues have made it more difficult for SPD to patrol the airport.
"By having dedicated police officers at Hanock International Airport, we will help ensure the safety and security of New Yorkers and visitors alike," Governor Hochul said.
The new airport police authority would have the power to enforce laws as New York State Troopers, with their Jurisdiction limited to airport property.
Lawmakers say the legislation will improve safety at Syracuse Airport.
"The renaissance at Hancock International Airport and the improvements to come are giving Central New York the world-class gateway its residents deserve and businesses need," said Sen. John Mannion. "With the creation of its own police force, it now has a long-term solution to enhance public safety. I'm grateful to the Airport Authority for executing its vision, to Assemblyman Magnarelli for his partnership, and to Governor Hochul for swiftly signing this important legislation into law."
