STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- One Staten Island lawmaker wants to make it easier for the hundreds of thousands of veterans who call New York home to find new careers now that they have completed their military service.

State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn), who serves as the chair of the Senate’s Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, recently announced a bill that would require the Department of Labor to create and maintain a list of available careers and job openings for veterans in New York has passed in the Senate.

“When my husband and I moved back to New York from Colorado after the end of his deployment, it was incredibly difficult to determine what resources were available to us,” said Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who represents the North Shore of Staten Island parts of South Brooklyn.

“That experience showed me just how overwhelming it can be for veterans reentering civilian life. This bill is a simple, common-sense step to help connect those who served our country with the opportunities they’ve earned. We should be doing everything we can to support their transition back into civilian life, and that includes making sure all of our veterans’ resources are easily accessible,” she continued.
