Firefighter awarded State Senate’s Liberty Medal for ‘extraordinary’ lifesaving action

BRIGHTON BEACH AND ALBANY — FDNY FIREFIGHTER JOSE CRISTALES WAS HONORED this week on the New York State Senate floor for saving the life of a woman pinned under an SUV last summer in his neighborhood. Cristales received the Liberty Medal from State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton for his life-saving efforts while off-duty. The York State Senate Liberty Medal is the State Senate’s highest civilian honor voted on and bestowed by the State Senate, that is awarded to individuals who have taken heroic, extraordinary action in service of others. For members of law enforcement or first responders, this means acting above and beyond the call of duty.
