Free Staten Island shredding event protects 200 residents against potential scams and fraud

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Nearly 200 residents lugged out bulky bundles of personal papers to safely dispose of during the latest free shredding event sponsored by District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, the Staten Island Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the New York City Department of Sanitation last week.
McMahon explained that shredding sensitive documents is essential to safeguarding personal information and preventing identity theft, before thanking Sen. Scarcella-Spanton, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the NYC Department of Sanitation for their “ongoing collaboration” and “dedication to keeping Staten Island safe.”
“I’m proud to partner with District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, the New York City Department of Sanitation and the Staten Island Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, to host another successful safe shredding event,” said Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who represents the North Shore of Staten Island and a part of South Brooklyn.
“This event provided a valuable service to the community and gave them the confidence in their ability to prevent fraud and protect themselves from identity theft,” she added.
