Going Down Swinging

State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton agreed that even if the borough liked it, the community didn’t. “I’ve actually hosted many meet-and-greets and community discussions on this issue. Each time, I simply ask people where they stand and consistently over 90 percent of residents I represent are opposed to the casino,” she said.
The senator also said the proposed 9 percent of jobs set aside for local residents wasn’t enough, and she had broader concerns about safety and congestion.
Scarcella-Spanton, Brannan, Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny and Reynoso all announced their opposition to the project Monday, before a final vote had even been scheduled. The three casino proposals in Manhattan have already been voted down by their community advisory committees, while four other proposals are still alive.
