Celebrating America 250: Huge American flag to fly from Verrazzano Bridge starting July 2

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The MTA is planning to fly a large-scale American flag on Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge starting Thursday, July 2, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Last April, Councilmember David Carr, a Republican who represents Staten Island’s Mid-Island and South Brooklyn, drafted a letter to the MTA requesting a flag be placed on the bridge next year. Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who represents the North Shore of Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn, and Assemblymember Michael Tannousis, a Republican who represents the East Shore of Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, also signed onto the letter last year.
