STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A large-scale American flag is poised to proudly fly on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The MTA has agreed to display the American flag on the bridge connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn during the Fourth of July weekend, according to local elected officials.

Last April, Councilmember David Carr, a Republican who represents Staten Island’s Mid-Island and South Brooklyn, drafted a letter to the MTA requesting a flag be placed on the bridge next year. Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who represents the North Shore of Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn, and Assemblymember Michael Tannousis, a Republican who represents the East Shore of Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, also signed onto the letter last year. Additionally, Councilmember Frank Morano, a Republican who represents the South Shore of Staten Island, and Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny, a Republican who represents parts of Brooklyn, sent a letter last year requesting the flag be displayed for the July 4 weekend. Borough President Vito Fossella also sent a letter in December requesting the flag.

“The Narrows are the entry point for any vessel entering the New York Harbor, and this fact in tandem with the fierce patriotism of communities on both sides of bridge makes this a perfect way to celebrate this historic milestone,” the electeds stated in the Thursday announcement.
