Statement From Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith Regarding The Ethics Reform Legislation

Malcolm A. Smith

May 26, 2009

“I have long recognized that it is imperative that the Legislature meets the standards the people of New York deserve from their elected representatives by enacting real ethics reform. The Legislature needs to take the lead to restore the public’s trust in the institutions charged with serving the people.

In the Senate, Senator Daniel Squadron has been working for several months on his own ethics reform legislation which will be posted for public comment on the Senate website, and will be reviewed as part of an ethics package at the scheduled public hearings of the Senate Ethics Committee chaired by Senator John Sampson.

We welcome the Governor's submission of ethics reform legislation and look forward to a presentation from his office at one or more of the three hearings the Senate Ethics Committee has scheduled for the coming weeks to discuss these issues.”
