Senator Ball Invites Entergy Officials to Testify at April 8th Homeland Security Hearing

Greg Ball

March 22, 2011

Senator Greg Ball announced today, he will be inviting representatives from the Indian Point Nuclear Power facility to testify on the readiness of the facility and its staff at the Homeland Security Hearing he is chairing on April 8th in New York City. Representatives from Entergy will join Senator Ball, as well as other Homeland security experts including Congressman Peter King Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security and Douglas Ziegler head of security at the MTA.

“As the Senate Chair of Homeland Security I take public safety extremely seriously. Nearly 10 years after 9-11, in my view, we still are not safe. On April 8th I will be hosting a Hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and I am seeking public input on how we can improve our overall public safety.”

The Senator met with officials from Entergy Monday to discuss the safety of the facility. In light of the recent events in Japan, the Senator wanted to know what has and can be done to improve Indian Points infrastructure to avoid similar occurrences

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of Japan during this time as they deal with the aftermath of the ferocious earthquake and tsunami and the resulting impacts- including at the Fukushima nuclear power plants. There are certainly risks associated with operating nuclear plants and other industrial facilities, and while the chance of an adverse event similar to what happened in Japan, occurring in the U.S. is very low, we have to take such a threat very seriously” stated Ball.
