Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently joined with Nassau County officials and members of the Roosevelt community in honoring one of its hometown heroes, basketball legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving.

Julius Erving grew up in Roosevelt and graduated from Roosevelt High School, where he starred on the basketball team.  Following high school, he attended the University of Massachusetts and went on to play in both the ABA and NBA. During his professional career, he won an NBA championship, two ABA championships, 4 league MVP awards, and was a 16-time all-star. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

In honor of his many contributions to the community, the County renamed Nassau Road, the street Julius Erving lived on from the ages of 13 and 21, between Pleasant Avenue and the Southern State Parkway “Julius W. Erving Avenue.”
