Senator Avella Gets DOT To Study Dangerous Bayside Intersection Once Again

Queens, NY - Today, Senator Tony Avella announced that Department of Transportation (DOT) is once again studying the intersection of Corporal Kennedy Street and 26th Avenue in Bay Terrace/Bayside to address long standing requests for additional traffic controls, specifically the installation of left turn signals.

“The Bay Terrace community has been asking for these controls for almost two decades.  Unfortunately, time and time again, DOT has denied these requests.  Hopefully, this new study will have a more positive result,” stated Senator Avella.

“While DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg indicated in an August 10th letter that DOT’s Pedestrian Projects Group is reviewing the existing traffic conditions she did not specifically say what safety enhancements were being studied for this intersection,” added Senator Avella.  “I subsequently wrote her stating that anything less than left turns signals is simply unacceptable.

Over the past several decades two people have died crossing this heavily trafficked intersection.  There is also a senior citizen center and a housing development for Holocaust survivors on this corner.
